Holidays with Our Fur Babies
It is that week!
The one that we all run around like crazy people looking for just one more gift for the ones we love. That includes our four-legged fur kids! Ours love opening their gifts. They absolutely know its theirs and get so excited to see what is inside the wrapping.
A few suggestions for things to avoid?
I have those! First and foremost, Raw Hide. Anything that has Raw Hide listed is not digestible. It is not only a big empty calorie, but also a surgery waiting to happen. It can not break down in the stomach, therefore, can not pass into the intestinal track. This is a horrible surgery and very expensive. There are many great “chewys” for dogs and cats. Dogs love beef, pork or lamb ears. They are a great source of protein. They clean their teeth and satisfy that need to chew. I also give my dogs ox tails, pig or cow snouts, collagen twist and bully sticks. Cats do well with rabbit or lamb ears and get the same benefits. Those that get grossed out over these, remember that your dog and cat are carnivores and require this type of protein. They also are using every part from the animal and in my opinion, that is ethically correct.
Corn or wheat should not be in any treats you buy. High allergens and empty calories! Be sure to ask those that bake homemade treats for your pets what flour they used. If your pet has to grain free, coconut, almond or buckwheat flour are safe. If you can use good grains, rice, oat or barley are great choices!
Last but not least!
Table food given as a special treat during the holiday can cause upset bellies or itchy skin. If you want to give them some skinless turkey or raw veggies in moderation you should be safe. Just be sure turkey is not on a list of allergens if your pet has been tested.
Enjoy your special time with your fur babies! Remember they give us gifts all year long so let’s make this day special for them also!
